A new way to look at wedding planning – When I look back on being a bride I was a big planner. I had to do list for the to do list! It seemed that my to do list kept on growing – even on the day of the wedding there were a lot of things that just didn’t get done. I think too many nights on Pinterest was a HUGE downfall. I wanted every little cute details that other brides were having for their wedding. Sometimes I think the days before we had internet were the best! Many times I feel that I am on information overload!! I recently came across an article about wedding planning and it brought up some great points.
I want my couple to learn a new way to look at wedding planning.
Here is my favorite quote…”the most magical moments of your day will be the ones you probably didn’t plan.” By having this attitude you won’t be bummed if the place cards didn’t match your invitations or if your didn’t have a chance to pick a signature drink. Go with the flow, leave most of the planning to me, and let whatever happens happen!!
- As a couple, create a vision and feel for your wedding day. Close your eyes and think about how you want to feel (happy, relaxed) and think of how you want your guests to feel (welcomed, like they are having fun). This vision should be an overall feeling. If by chance something didn’t go the way it was supposed to at the ceremony or reception, STOP and look around – are the guests having fun, are you happy? If you answer yes to this questions then everything is a ok and nothing needs to be changed.
- Run the small details past your future 10th wedding anniversary self. What are the details of the wedding that you are going to remember in 10 years? You probably are going to have a hard time remembering what you ate, but you will probably remember if the food was good or bad. You will probably not remember what the cake looked like but remember if you smashed it in the other’s face or if you ate it out of the freezer a year later. And you probably aren’t going to remember what color the tablecloths were!
- Remember that your guests won’t know what they are missing. The guests are not going to know that it was too windy for the rose petals and that is why they aren’t on the ground. They are probably not even going to remember what your decorations were or wedding colors. The important things to guests are sharing the special day with the two of you. (Another reason why it is nice to have a small wedding is that the guests can really feel like they are part of your special day.) If you don’t have time to order matching envelopes in the color of the invitations that is something that the guests are not going to know you had planned.
- The things that go wrong will become your favorite stories. My favorite story about this from my wedding has to do with the transportation we took to the wedding ceremony. One of the things I was supposed to do was to coordinate how the bridal party, my mom, and myself were getting to the ceremony from the hotel. I was going to get Uber to come by to get us but Uber was new and I really didn’t know how to schedule a car. The church was a few block away but I wasn’t going to walk there. I knew I hadn’t scheduled anything the morning of the wedding. Things were way to crazy with the day of wedding duties and the car was never scheduled. Minutes before we had to leave for the church I said, “I didn’t have time to schedule a car.” (I probably didn’t say it but yelled it!!) So we ended up calling taxi to take us to the ceremony. It was a yellow taxi van. It was really funny to take a yellow taxi to the wedding but we all were cracking up laughing when it pulled up!
So now that you know some new ways to look at wedding planning, maybe some of the wedding stress can be taken away.
