Incorporating Children into the Wedding Ceremony

Incorporating Children into the Wedding Ceremony –

If your children will be at the wedding, you might want to consider incorporating the children into the ceremony.   But, always be sensitive to the wishes and the feelings of the children and never force them into doing something that is uncomfortable to them.   Some may be excited about the wedding and may want to have an active role while others may be shy or even less than enthusiastic about the marriage.   Respect their wishes.

For blended families, this may be a time to show then they are part of one new family.   It is a time to share your love for one another, hopes for the future, and the beginning of a new life together. But, if they would like to participate, here are a few ways to include them.

  • Have them carry a banner down the aisle, announcing the new couple.
  • Have them decorate a sign to be displayed at the ceremony.
  • They can walk the bride down the aisle.
  • They can be a flower girl, ring bearer, bridesmaid, groomsman, usher.
  • You can add on a shell unity ceremony where the children are invited up to share in a wish for the future of the new couple and their new family.  There is a keepsake container with the shells that is given to the couple.  The keepsake can be displayed in the house and remind the family of their new life together.
  • The groom can present a child with a ring or necklace after he puts a ring on his bride’s finger.
  • The bride or groom might include a vow spoken to the child.
  • A special blessing and prayer can be done including the children.
  • The child could have a first dance with the bride and the groom.
