Historical Sites In San Luis Obispo To Visit

Historical sites in San Luis Obispo to Visit –

Here are a few places you might want to check out if you are a history buff:

Butterfly Grove – Without fail, every year thousands of Monarch butterflies visit Pismo Beach where they seek shelter and relief from freezing northern winters.   From October to February, they make Pismo Beach, Morro Bay, and Pacific Grove their home.   Look up into the limbs of the eucalyptus trees in Pismo State Beach and you will see clusters of these orange and black colored butterflies suspended from the branches.   If you want more information about the butterflies, visit the Natural History Museum in Morro Bay.

Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa – This mission is the 5 th in order, founded in 1772, by Father Junipero Serra.   Docent-led tours are available daily.   This mission has an excellent museum filled with Chumash artifacts.   The front façade of the building has three suspended bells that ring every day at noon.

Mission San Miguel – Another one of California’s historical and cultural treasures, this mission boasts beautiful old adobe buildings with foundations laid more than 200 years ago.

Point San Luis Lighthouse – May through October on Wednesdays and Saturday year round, tour the lighthouse in Avila Beach to learn its history and to get a glimpse into the life of a lighthouse keeper.   At the historic Light Station Park, you can enjoy views stretching from Vandenberg to Avila.

Piedras Blancas Lighthouse – Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this lighthouse located in San Simeon is open to the public daily.   This is a piece of our nation’s past and it played a vital role in maritime safety.

Pedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery – Here about 17,000 seals come to this rookery for birthing, breeding, molting, and resting.   Come and take a peek.
